I’ve been excited about the fact that OpenSim supports server-side NPC characters (my current & previous AI experiments have all run separately, which is more resource intensive), but there is very little in the way of documentation to show how one would implement these NPCs.

I have my own dedicated server on which to run an entire world, as large as I care to make it. I’ve basically gone from having an acre to having a continent! The software itself took awhile to get running properly, and I’m still suffering occasional hiccups from it, but all in all the place is stable enough to open to the general public.
